The Unexpected

In doing this weeks assignment I was awed at my result. When I sat down with my husband at first to ask about a problem he is having I really thought this was going to be a struggle and very superficial and at the beginning it was. When he started taking me seriously and started answering my questions honestly we really got the the heart of the matter. I really see now how the client sometimes doesn’t have any idea what the problem really is. This exercise really brought that home for me.

Maybe I watch too many movies!

So sitting in class last week got me thinking about a few things. We all had our preconceived notions about what consultants do and they were all pretty much the same. This got me thinking about how consultants are portrayed in the media and in particular about one of my favorite movies, Office Space. Below is a link for a clip from the movie from YouTube. In this clip “the Bobs” are two consultants this company brought in to help cut costs for the company. This movie is hilarious because it pokes fun at all the crazy things that go on in companies today. Office Space

Something Dr. Carter said last week also made me think of a scene from another movie, also one of my favorites, Shrek. Think about Dr. Carter’s comments about how PC is like an onion and then click on the link below and watch the video. Enjoy!

I am so excited about this course. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this course and I have zero formal experience with consulting. I want to learn not only how to help within my organization and life but how to help effectively. Just reading the first few pages of the Block and Schein texts has really been an eye opener. I have heard the words process consultation before but always really thought of it as mumbo jumbo that doesn’t really do anyone any good. I imagine there is a lot of that out there in the world, but I think learning how to consult will be one of my most powerful tools.

My First Post (a.k.a. title explanation)

Well here I am writing on my very own blog. I actually have used a blog before, my brother got me started and I have to say they are a pretty cool thing to do. I wrote a little about myself in the About Me page, but for the most part that was personal stuff; here I am going to write about my journey to this point. Flashback to 7 years ago…… I had just graduated from college at High Point University in NC and had been accepted into the PhD program in Human Genetics at VCU, so off to Richmond I moved. I started the program and soon realized I had made a huge mistake. I HATED it! All I ever wanted to do with my PhD was teach biology and genetics in a small liberal arts schools like HPU. I soon found out that medical research is a cut throat field not suited for wimps like me. I made the decision to drop out. I had never quit anything in my life and this was a very scary time for me. I call the next three years the dark ages!! I was suddenly thrust into the “real world” and was terrified. I took the first science oriented job offered to me, lab analyst at an environmental lab. It was stinky and dangerous at times. By the time I was 25 years old I was managing this lab, which I really had no business doing. I was miserable yet again, working 70 hour weeks, not enjoying what I was doing and feeling as though something was missing from my life. I made the decision to leave this lab and look for another job. The silver lining of everything thus far is that I loved Richmond and wanted to stay, I just needed to find my place. July of 2005 I was offered a job at VCU medical center as a med tech in the blood bank. I accepted and it has been the best decision of my life. I love my job and I found my place. I have a passion for science and teaching and in the blood bank I can do both. I work in the lab and help teach med tech students and medical school residents. So if it isn’t clear yet how this explains my title then here is the explanation. After a long journey down many different paths, I finally feel that I am home.
